The Brand refresh of D.C. UNITED
In 2014, D.C. United was on the brink of a new era. As one of Major League Soccer’s founding clubs, the team was nearing its 20th anniversary and finalizing plans to build the first soccer-specific stadium in the nation’s capital. The team’s ownership and new executives wanted to refresh the team’s identity to reflect this next chapter. Redesigning a sports team’s logo is always a sensitive task—especially one as iconic and beloved by fans (myself included) as D.C. United’s. It was a challenge, to say the least. But alongside designer Zakk Waleko, I helped guide the direction of the brand refresh, shaping it into what you still see today.
A decade later, this refreshed D.C. United logo remains a proud symbol across the region—embraced by fans and worn by a new generation of players and supporters.
In addition to the crest redesign, the wordmark (used as an alternative to the full logo) was also redesigned and can be seen across various applications today, from the seats at Audi Field to fan apparel.
